Our mission

As of right now, we're already supporting social projects in over 45 countries. Our goal is to provide long-term support for at least one project in every destination we offer trips to. We regularly review our existing partnerships and are continually adding new projects to our portfolio.

Sustainability Insights

In 2023, we also achieved a great deal on our journey towards more sustainability. In our Sustainability Insights report, we provide transparent insights into the topic of sustainability at journaway and how we want to continue moving step by step towards sustainability in future.

47 projects worldwide

From protecting ecosystems and supporting local communities to creating educational opportunities and much more, we're proud to support social projects and local organisations around the world as we strive to become more sustainable. We're delighted to be able to contribute to the valuable work being done by the dedicated people on site.

Help in Time, South Africa

A home, somewhere that's near and dear even when it's far away, a favourite place – everyone should have a home to feel comfortable and be themselves in. We firmly believe this, and therefore we actively support the Siyazama Crèche of the Help in Time (HIT) foundation as part of a project that's close to our hearts and makes it possible for children in South Africa to have just that.

There are lots of needy families and children in South Africa, and this foundation supports projects that provide them basic care and educational opportunities and help them integrate into society. The donations are used to cover the costs of attending Siyazama Crèche and provide the children there with hot meals.

Mahampy, Madagaskar

In southeast Madagascar, opportunities to earn a living are extremely limited, especially for women. Weaving mahampy reeds enables them to generate a small income for their households. But there's a problem. Due to inconsistent sales and poor market access, merchants are having trouble paying wages, and at the same time, the country’s ecosystems are being endangered by the unregulated harvesting of reeds.

Project Mahampy is committed to improving the infrastructure of the weaving industry and providing education about the financial and biological factors affecting it.

Trash Heroes, Asia

Warm, powdery sand, rushing waves and the bright, shining sun – these are probably the first things that come to mind when you think of a relaxing day at the beach. However, the littering of our oceans and coasts, which is happening more and more, is becoming an ever-bigger problem, especially on our planet's otherwise idyllic beaches.

This is why the Trash Heroes from Thailand have taken it upon themselves to rid the world's beaches of rubbish via weekly cleanups. The Trash Heroes network now extends to over 120 countries and is steadily growing. Incidentally, we've already participated in a few cleanups ourselves, and even if you're just travelling through, you're more than welcome to lend a hand on site.

Our contribution for our planet

Deep green rainforests, icy glaciers and time-honoured traditions – the wonders of this world are just waiting to be explored, but they also need protection. It's time to take responsibility for nature, climate protection and our planet. That's why we offset the CO₂ emissions caused by the services used on site for every trip you take with us. The costs? We cover them all.

We use the internationally recognised CARMACAL CO₂ calculator to determine the carbon emissions for all services used on site during our trips. We provide answers as to how much CO₂ is emitted by overnight stays, transport and activities in the country being visited, and all these emissions are offset for you free of charge in cooperation with myclimate.

Our partner myclimate has launched the climate protection project ‘Indigenous communities protect rainforest in Fiji’. Instead of using felled trees to earn a living, the country's local landowners do so by protecting the forest. This allows the rainforest to bind CO₂, and thanks to the landowners' work, the emissions from your trip are offset – an offset that's expressed in figures using carbon certificates. For example, when a calculated amount of carbon is emitted as a result of the services you use on site during your trip, we purchase a certificate to offset that same amount of carbon.

You can top it all off by offsetting the emissions from your flights through our partner atmosfair. These are always calculated per flight and per person.

If you've got any questions, are simply curious or have any ideas about other projects we could support, just send us an e-mail at responsibility@journaway.com. Our sustainability experts Inka and Regina will be happy to take time to address your concerns.
